Science

Science and ICT - Lots of good ideas and link for using ICT in Scienc teaching
The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions.
Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy.
All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.
Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. If that's not enough, you can download dozens of easy to install add-ons with more objects.
Stellarium: Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.
Practical Chemistry Lab Skills Practical Chemistry LabSkills is a set of engaging ICT resources designed to help students and teachers get the most out of practical chemistry lessons.
Studyjams   A nice collection of animations, videos, slides and reference articles exploring a wide range of topics. It is a US product, but clearly relevant to the UK too. Lots of real-world examples keep the content interesting.
Moonbase AlphaMoonbase Alpha is a very popular resource from NASA for cooperative game-based learning. Pupils assume the roles of astronauts trying to maintain life support on moon settlement. Great for improving problem solving skills.
Planet-scicast A truly brilliant site containing hundreds of videos of creative science experiments carried out by schools across the UK. They are really inspiring – whether just to watch or to recreate with your own classes.
Nobelprize A fascinating collection of games and simulations, based on Nobel-prize winning achievements. Each online resource comes with Nobel background information and a range of downloadable goodies.

www.bp.com Science Skills (from BP) is a nice set of resources for KS3/4, set in real-life contexts designed to develop scientific enquiry skills. There are ample opportunities for planning, fair testing, pattern seeking and concluding.

SEN
These sites were kindly shared with me by Mira Cooke from a Special school in Woking.  The notes on how they can be used are hers.
www.jacksonpollock.org
- simple 'drip painting' creater. Great with touch screen as it responds to speed of movement & changes colour when contact is broken & resumed. I use it frequently to teach cause & effect.
thisissand.com
- a drawing creater of sorts, used with touch screen. A lot of our students like the sound which goes with the falling sand, which is good for encouraging them to begin intereacting with screens.
bomomo.com
- another favourite drawing creater. More intense patterns, which some students find too much but others love.
www.purplemash.com
- Site by '2simple' - a company who produce software aimed at SEN users. Lots of different resources & interactive activities, very visual - often pictoral rather than
text. Can use some programmes with a switch (we use large switches via adapters for students whose motor skills do not allow them to use a mouse or keyboard)
Ranges from very simple programmes to basic 3d design tool.
www.symbolworld.org
- Symbol resources (we use symbols alongside text to assist reading for many of our more able students) - not a huge amount, but the monthly 'eLive' magazine is popular with our older students.
www.gamesforthebrain.com
- fairly simple interactive games, good for large touchscreen. 'Soundory' is popular with my more able students. I use some of the games whilst teaching turn taking & social interaction skills.
www.petewells.co.uk
- Sensory stories: our students access texts through word & symbols, visuals, and sensory experiences. This site has various stories written or adapted by Pete Wells for SLD/ PMLD students (particularly older students) - each comes with a powerpoint slideshow, text and sensory props list. I have adapted a couple for my classes, and create similar resources for other texts we study.
www.helpkidzlearn.com
- Site by Interactive Technologies, who provide acessable ICT equipment and resources, and training for ICT use in SEN settings. Various games, stories & activities, most are switch adaptable. Some support curriculum teaching, some teach basic cause & effect, hand eye co-ordination & choice making skills.
www.voki.com
- Allows you to create your own speaking avatar. Have found these useful for engaging students who have little interest in computers/ screen (an animated figure saying their name can get them looking to see what happens next!. Have a friend who uses this regularly in secondary MFL teaching.
Creating the avitars can get quite addictive though!
discoverybox.e2bn.org
- Allows you to create collections of images around a theme/ debate. Good as a prompt tool for discussion work, or for our students to prompt communication about a collection of images they have chosen.
